DIY Denim Coaster Tutorial

What You’ll Need:
* An old pair of blue jeans. If you plan on making a hot pad, you’ll need a few pairs.

* Fabric glue
* Measuring tape
* Scissors
* Pen
* Straight edge
* Optional~ Clamps
* Optional ~ Sewing Machine

With Hems~

1~ To make a coaster with hems, you’ll need at least 3 pairs of jeans with a similar width hem.

2~ With your scissors make a cut into the hem of your jeans.

3~ Cut along the seam of your hem until its detached from your jeans.

4~ Continue step 2 and 3 until all of the hems are detached

5~ Take the ends of 2 hems and glue them together with fabric glue. Make sure your hems have the correct orientation so that top of hem 1 is glued to the top of hem 2. You can sew the hems together if you have a sewing machine ( make sure to backtack).

6~ If you glued your hems together, clamp them with a small A clamp. This with help ensure a strong bond.

7~ Continue steps 5 and 6 until all of your hems are attached together.

8~ Take your fabric glue and apply it to the first couple of inches of your hem. ( Left to Right)

9~ Tightly roll your hem in until you’ve reached the end of the glue.

10~ Continue Step 9, pulling and wrapping the hem around itself. Make sure to run your fingers around the edge as you roll to ensure a nice clean edge.

11~ apply just a little extra glue when you get to the very end and pull tight. Hold for a minute or so to make sure that the glue has really bonded the fabric together. Let it dry for a couple of hours.

With The Seams ~

One pair of jeans should make 1 coaster

1~ Turn your jeans inside out

2~ Take the seam and fold it to the right. Take a pen and mark along the edge of the seam. There should be about ½ inch of fabric from the line to the seam.

3~ Take your scissors and cut along that line. Once you get to the end of your line, make a cut across the seam and past about a ½ inch.

4~ Fold the seam and the freshly cut denim to the left, and mark it with a pen. Once again, there should be about a ½ inch of fabric from the line to the seam.

5~ Cut along the line until the seam is detached from the pair of jeans.

6~ Repeat steps 2-5 on the rest of the seams

7~ Take one of your denim strips, lay it flat and apply a thin line of fabric glue all the way down the seam. You only need to do one side. f you have a sewing machine, you can just sew a straight line down the seam

8~ Fold the seam and press

9~ Repeat steps 7 and 8 until all of your strips have been folded and glued.

10~ Take 2 strips and apply fabric glue at the end of one of the strips. Place the second strip on top of the glue. Clamp it with a small A clamp to ensure a strong bond.  Continue this until all of the strips have been glued together.

11~ Take the right end, apply about a 1 inch strip of glue and fold over the very end. This will make a nice clean fold on the end of your coaster.

12~ Take your strand of denim seams and lay the left end flat on your table. Apply fabric glue to the first 2 or three inches of the strip. (Left to Right)

13~ Tightly start to roll the strip into itself until you have reached the end of the glue. Apply another few inches of glue and continue to wrap the denim around itself, making sure to pull it taut as you wrap.

14~ Apply a little extra glue at the very end, and hold it for about a minute to make sure it has a strong hold. Let it dry for a few hours.

With Just The Fabric ~

Make the seam coasters first!

1~ Take what’s left of your jeans, and lay them inside out on the floor.

2~ Take a measuring tape and a pen, and starting at the bottom, make a mark every ¾ of an inch. Do this all the way up the pants.

3~ Take a straight edge and your pen, and connect the dots (going up).

4~ Take your scissors and cut along the line until you reach the end. Continue to do this until all you have are denim strips.

5~ Lay one strip flat on the table, and apply a thin line of fabric glue all the way down the strip. fold in half and press together. Do this to all of your strips. If you have a sewing machine, just fold your strips in half and sew a straight line down the middle. Make sure to backtack.

6~ Take 2 strips and apply fabric glue at the end of one of the strips. Place the second strip on top of the glue. Clamp it with a small A clamp to ensure a strong bond.  Continue this until you have about 8 strips glued together. (

Note ~ Jeans vary in length so you may need to apply more srips as you go).

8~ Take your strand of denim seams and lay the left end flat on your table. Apply fabric glue to the first 2 or three inches of the strip. (Left to Right)

9~ Tightly start to roll the strip into itself until you have reached the end of the glue. Apply another few inches of glue and continue to wrap the denim around itself, making sure to pull it taut as you wrap.

10~ If you notice that your coaster or hot pad aren’t big enough, add a few more strips at the end and let them dry as you roll.

11~ Once your coaster is to your desired size, take the very end of your denim strand and apply about a ½ inch of fabric glue. Fold the end in to create a nice clean fold.

12~ Finnish wrapping your coaster, and apply a little extra glue at the very end. Hold it for about a minute to make sure it has a strong hold. Let it dry for a few hours.
